The reasoning behind my reasons for…
Written by Brock Maglio

Preface

This is my chance to briefly explain my personal motivation as it pertains to our wedding’s eco theme. It’s a glimpse into a mind set that motivates me in many of the things I do in life. Everything I express is from my own perspective, as a collection of many experiences from my past.

Introduction

I see life as a wild ride chalked full of individual games.  At the end of the day I judge myself based on how well I played each game. For instance I see work as a game, I see my health as a game, I see getting enough sleep at night as a game, and I see everything that I have the power to influence as a game. I use the term game for the following reason. Games are meant to be fun. As children we are taught not to take games too seriously but to do the best we can. At the end of the day, I feel good knowing that I did the best I could. Even after a bad day, as long as I did the best I could I feel great! Trying my best is truly the one thing that can always make me happy regardless of the environment around me.

There are many days when I don’t feel happy and sure enough its usually when I’m sitting around doing nothing… in other words not participating in any games.

Writing is a game to me, and sure enough, as I write this, I feel happy. So keep this in mind as you read on as the general thought that I express below could seem gloomy to some but I assure you it is written with happiness.

One of the games that I have been playing as of late is the game of “making the world better”. I am not very good at this game yet although I fully intend to improve my game-play as I get more practice. I feel the same way about this game as I do about hockey although I am probably better at hockey. As far as passion goes though, hockey and “making the world better” run toe to toe. Many of the things I do sports wise are directly motivated to improve my gameplay in hockey. For example, I weight train mainly to get stronger for hockey, I stretch, do cardio, drink protein shakes, and take supplements all to get better at hockey. Being healthy will surely help me “play” better at “making the world better” because having lots of energy is vital. There are many things that I hope to do now and in the future to improve my abilities at “making the world better”… one of which is helping Tanya produce the eco-wedding idea that we came up with.

Why did I start playing the game of “making the world better”?

This one is a no-brainer. Just pick up a book, read the newspaper, turn on the TV… there is more ways to make the world better than you can shake a stick at. I spent too much time playing the game of “bitching about what’s wrong with the world” until I realized there’s no prize to be won for bitching. If there was a prize I’d be the world champion by now… but for some reason no one ever gave me a trophy. I suppose there’s no trophy for making a difference either but there is sure to be some reward whether spiritual or otherwise.

Is good leadership a game within the game?

I think so. I think one of the most obvious questions that come up when we hear about all of the problems in the world is “do we have the right leadership to solve these issues”. I’d say lets leave it up to the worlds mayors, premiers, prime ministers, and presidents but…

Do I believe in our leaders?

Before I can address this question, let me work through some condensed thoughts… I believe that the most important value anyone can possess in life and for good leadership for that matter is honesty, followed closely by integrity. Unfortunately these values get compromised all the time, all around us.

Has there ever been a time in history when our world leaders seemed to lack more honesty and integrity than now? To guess the answer to this question, my response is “No”.

I think that my answer is correct not because we have had better leaders in the past but that we are more knowledgeable as individuals than ever before. In other words, now we know better. Knowing better is the result of living in a time known to some as the information age. It’s a time when we can all broadcast facts and opinions more freely than ever before. This website is a perfect example of this.

What information have I absorbed over the years?

Concrete information linking corporations, money, and politics induces questions about our existence and about our direction as human beings. For me, the answers to these questions highlight a general lack of virtue not only in our leaders, but also in myself and most others who factor their own levels of comfort before anything else.  This western culture of comfort has spread globally like an epidemic, but at what cost? I think most of us already know.

How does this information make me feel?

Most of us agree that media sources are now tied directly to corporate interests. The same can be said about our governments. Perhaps there was a time not too long ago when no one questioned the information spoon fed to us by the media, but those times have changed. Now only the ignorant digest it with a smile, while the rest of us toss and turn at night, then stumble while sleep deprived through our busy existences wondering what we can do to make things better.

Now that we know, what’s next?

Slowly but surely we are fighting through this period of inaction as more and more key ideas come to light, illuminating a pathway to a future that we all would have signed up for when entering this world.

So why do I play the game of “making the world better”?

It is important to me that we turn this “ship” around by confronting each problem with honesty… and proceed with integrity to find a solution for each. I believe that this period of “awareness without action” is coming to an end, as more and more of us are ready to sacrifice our “comfort” to create something better. With our advances in information management and communication I believe that it is possible to create a utopia. Imagine working toward the creation of heaven on earth as opposed to wondering whether one exists at all. There as so many different religions. Imagine if it was everyone’s religion to make the world better. It’s a crazy thought, but just imagine.
